Protein After a Workout
First and foremost enjoying your protein after a workout will deliver nutrients to your muscles to help recovery, as well as help them increase in mass and strength. Aiding recovering can help reduce those post workout aches and pains, this is because your body will work hard to synthesise the protein you’ve consumed in order to rebuild the muscle’s fibres.
Should you choose to have your protein after you exercise, it is suggested that this is done within the hour of your workout finishing. This period of time is what is know as the ‘anabolic window’ and is the ideal time to reap the benefits of protein bars or supplements.
So What’s the Answer?
Ultimately it comes down to personal preference and what your day-to-day routine is. If you’ve been busy and not had time to eat much, then ensure you have a high protein snack prior to your workout, that way you have given your muscles the fuel they need, as well as having a boost of energy.
If you’re someone who doesn’t like to eat before a workout and you have consumed enough throughout the day, then have your protein post workout to ensure you’re making the most of your anabolic window and taking care of your muscles.

One in a hundred people in the UK live with coeliac disease – but there are many who are not even aware of its existence and many of these people may be suffering unexplained symptoms associated with it.
What is it?
It is a serious disease, where our body’s immune system attacks the tissues in the gut when we eat gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley and rye).
What are the symptoms?
These can range from very mild to very severe and can include: bloating, diarrhoea, nausea, wind, constipation, tiredness, mouth ulcers. Also in some cases, but not all, unexplained weight loss and anaemia.
It is often misdiagnosed as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) because of the way the symptoms affect the gut. There are other symptoms associated with coeliac disease and more information and help can be found at the Coeliac UK website.
What are the next steps?
When a diagnosis for coeliac disease has been made, the treatment is a gluten free diet. Awareness of the foodstuffs that are gluten free is essential to this. These include: all types of rice, potato, corn, meat, fish, eggs, cheese, milk, most yoghurts, fruits, vegetables, and pulses (peas, beans and lentils). With the help of doctors and dietician referrals, learning to manage the disease can become an easy process.
Help in understanding the disease will be given such as: learning about food labelling so that the correct choices can be made when food shopping; understanding about “cross contamination” so that cooking can be done safely at home; and understanding restaurant menu markings and knowing the questions to ask when ordering a meal. Many restaurants now have membership of the Coeliac UK’s Gluten Free(GF) accreditation scheme. A list of restaurants that have been recognised to cater for the needs of coeliacs and the symbol to look out for can also be found on the Coeliac UK website.
